Why photo and video should come from one team

Most couples book a photographer and a videographer separately, then hope the two get along. Usually they do. Sometimes they spend the day negotiating the same three metres of floor while you wait.

I have shot enough weddings alongside a film crew I met that morning to know the difference. When the two teams have never spoken, the day gets divided. Someone always loses, and it is rarely the crew.

So I stopped leaving it to chance. On two and three day celebrations I bring a cinematographer I work with by choice. We walk the venue together before the day. We agree who leads which moment before anyone picks up a camera. You notice none of it, which is the point.

The photographs do not change. That part is mine, and it stays exactly what it has always been. What changes is that you also hear your vows again, in your own voices, ten years from now.

The Film Side

Justin is a director of photography whose work has been released in cinemas before it was ever shown at a wedding. He shoots quietly, never in the way, and edits like someone who has spent years in a colour suite. Which is why I asked him.

We walk the venue together before the day and agree who leads which moment before anyone picks up a camera. You sign two agreements, one with me and one with the film team, so each of us answers to you for our own work. One conversation, one timeline, one point of contact.
