What the Ritz Demands from a Photographer

The Ritz Paris is not a venue you can photograph casually. The interiors are technically demanding in ways that only become apparent once you are inside with a camera. Warm tungsten from the chandeliers mixes with cooler daylight from the Place Vendôme windows, and the gilded surfaces reflect both sources in unpredictable patterns. As a Ritz Paris wedding photographer, I have learned that the key is to stop fighting the mixed light and instead lean into it. The warmth is the atmosphere. Correcting it away removes the very quality that makes the Ritz feel like the Ritz.

I shoot here with the Fujifilm GFX medium format system because the dynamic range handles these extreme lighting conditions without losing detail in either the shadows or the highlights. When a bride stands beneath a chandelier in Salon Psyche, the exposure swing between her face and the crystal above is enormous. The larger sensor gives me room to protect both.

Place Vendôme at Dusk

The most rewarding fifteen minutes for any Ritz Paris wedding photographer happen just before sunset, when we step outside to Place Vendôme. The octagonal plaza catches the last amber light of the day, and for a brief window the Vendôme column, the Ritz facade, and the couple exist in the same golden tone. I move quickly during these minutes because the light disappears fast, but the images from that window are consistently among the strongest in every Ritz gallery I deliver.
